In August, 2014 thirty damaged VVER-440 spent fuel assemblies were removed from Hungary to Mayak PA, Russia for reprocessing. Thus, the project on elimination of the consequences of SFA failure in a special tank at Paks NPP Unit 2 in April 2003 was successfully completed.
The project was implemented with participation of many enterprises of the Russian nuclear industry, including Sosny R&D Company. Sosny R&D Company specialists developed unique technologies and equipment for loading the damaged SNF fragments into canisters and drying the SNF-containing canisters, as well as demonstrated high level of performing practical operations on the special tank clear-our and the SNF preparation for shipment to the reprocessing facility.
The experience gained during the project implementation allowed Sosny R&D Company to participate in tenders and offer services on handling the damaged SNF both in Russia and abroad.
