Air shipment of nuclear materials has its obvious advantages over the other transport modes: it significantly cuts the time of transportation, provides the best physical protection of the material; the approving procedures in transit countries are easier; geographically remote regions can be reached.

That caused the wide use of air transport in the RRRFR program: all projects for removal of non-irradiated materials (more than 20 shipments from thirteen countries), as well as a significant part of irradiated fuel shipments (13 shipments from six countries) were performed by air.

Organization of nuclear materials air shipments has its peculiarities, connected with more strict regulatory requirements on safety, specific approach to the shipment coordination; special technical solutions concerning packages have to be applied.

The report summarized the experience in the RRRFR air shipments organized by Sosny R&D Company in cooperation with Volga-Dnepr Airlines in 2002-2014. It describes the peculiarities, possibilities and limitations of this transport mode with respect to nuclear materials, and discusses the lessons learned.
